By Merle Haggard
Running Time: 3:07
90 BPM 2/2
A modern take on a Merle Haggard classic, the opening line alone could be an anthem for the end of 2020: "If we make it through December, everything's gonna be alright, I know..."
The opening track on the album begins with a shimmery, ethereal pedal steel and electric guitar intro before the train beat emerges and the tune begins around the 30 second mark.
By Kyle Reid
Running Time: 3:24
110 BPM 4/4
An upbeat tune set on New Year's Eve that is sure to bring a smile to your face and a tap to your toe.
The track opens with a 35-second pedal steel intro of Auld Lang Syne and features founding members of Montreal's Les Royal Pickles, Louis Leveque (banjo) and Christian LeClerc (tuba).
By Frank Loesser
Running Time: 4:35
60 BPM 6/8
A haunting delivery of a holiday classic.
This track features a simple hollow body electric accompaniment with an earnest yet vulnerable vocal performance. A highlight of this track is a near-perfect lonesome pedal steel solo from Kyle Reid at 2:30.
By Adam Duritz, Ben Mize, Daniel Vickrey, Matthew Malley, Charles Gillingham, and David Bryson (Counting Crows)
Running Time: 4:03
73 BPM 4/4
The most produced track on the project, this is a unique take on a year-end favorite.
The track opens with exposed electric guitar and vocal. The subtle tension derived from this simple production makes the arrival of the rhythm section and harmonies at 2:16 so very satisfying.
By John Prine and Patrick McLauglin
Running Time: 3:31
86 BPM 2/2
A fitting tribute to John Prine, this track was not originally planned for this project. But an unplanned off-the-cuff one-take recording turned out to be the perfect ending for the collection. Rigby Summer explains:
"We recorded all the songs for this album in two afternoons at Kyle's new space in Norman. But it was the end of summer and little did we know that we would fight to keep the singing cicadas outside from bleeding in to our mics in the studio. On the second day, while doing final vocals for (What are You Doing) New Year's Eve, the cicadas returned so we decided to play this John Prine tune I had been fiddling on between takes with hopes that it would pass the time till the pests moved along. Sure enough, by the time we finished one take, the cicadas left and we went back to work. When Kyle sent the first set of mixes he said 'I trimmed up that Prine tune--I think you're gonna like it.' A few days later, I found out we didn't receive clearance for another song, so a way was made for 'Summer's End' to join the album. Total kismet."
